2019 NYCC & NYPL
By Ryan Mita
On October 3rd, New York Comic Con @ The New York Public Library hosted their third annual day of off-site programming for librarians and educators. Held in the mid-Manhattan NYPL, the CBC Graphic Novel Committee was delighted to contribute programming, once again.
The panel “Comics and Graphic Novels for Kids: Meet the Makers” was enjoyably moderated by Allie Affinito a NYPL Children’s Librarian. Panelists included: Cathy G. Johnson (The Breakaways), Sarah Graley (Glitch), and Ethan M. Aldridge (Estranged). These talented comic artists all write and draw their graphic novels!
Discussion topics ranged from: how their projects get started, the stereotypes of comic artists, and the overarching theme of finding your community. And with nearly 80 audience members, the questions were quite informed and next-level.
The morning slate of panels were fantastic, including a SRO Opening Keynote from Ngozi Ukazu (Check, Please!) and the unique panel “Graphic Orientalism: Deconstructing Asian Identity in Comics”.
