Happy Birthday, Esphyr Slobodkina!
Caps for Sale remains a favorite in the genre, having sold over two million copies. It has been translated into more than a dozen languages. The book’s repetition and humor make it a perfect read-along.
In addition to her work in children’s books, Slobodkina was an acclaimed modernist artist and co-founder of American Abstract Artists (AAA). Her innovative collages influenced such illustrators as Leo Lionni, Ezra Jack Keats, and Eric Carle. At the age of 90, she established the Slobodkina Foundation, which continues to serve as both a museum and reading room for children.
