My Teacher is a Monster! (No, I am Not.) | November 5, 2014
by Peter Brown (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, July 2014)
Bobby’s teacher Ms. Kirby is a monster. She yells, she stomps, and has no patience for paper airplanes. At least Bobby never has to see Ms. Kirby outside of school. But one day there she is, sitting in his favorite park! What is Bobby to do?
Fortunately, this awkward encounter transitions into a surprisingly pleasant day. As they let their guards down and have a bit of fun, Ms. Kirby is slowly humanized, in more ways than one. Both are glad to eventually part ways, but Bobby learns that he shouldn’t be so quick to judge—teachers are people too.
I absolutely loved Children Make Terrible Pets, and Peter Brown’s most recent picture book is just as humorous and heartwarming. The illustrations are layered, textured, and full of subtle details that add depth to the deceptively simple images. The pacing and comedic timing are spot on, aided by call-out speech bubbles. With a message that’s clear without hitting you over the head, this title is another great addition to the Peter Brown collection.
