Agent/Editor Speed Networking | November 13, 2014
by Chris Hernandez (Associate Editor, Harper Teen & HarperCollins Children's Books)
On September 23, dozens of junior editors and agents made the trek to Beckett’s Bar and Grill in lower Manhattan for the Early Career Committee’s Third Annual Agent/Editor Speed Networking Event.
The night kicked off with a brief mixer, which gave everyone a chance to unwind from a long day, say “hello” to friendly faces, and grab a drink. Then — with their business cards in tow and their elevator pitches practiced — the editors and agents paired off for their one-on-one speed networking sessions.
Taking the advice of speed-networkers past, the length of this year’s sessions were increased by another minute, giving editors and agents a little more wiggle room to discuss all things publishing, including the titles they work on and the kind of books they’re looking for. The most popular genre of the night: realistic fiction. (A fifth of agents and a quarter of editors listed it in their top three areas of interest.) With a healthy mix of people just beginning in the industry and those actively looking to acquire, numerous literary connections were made…and we hope some of them were perfect matches!
