Donalyn Miller Joins Scholastic Book Fairs as Manager, Independent Reading
NEW YORK, NY — Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, today announced that Donalyn Miller is joining the company as Manager of Independent Reading and Outreach, Scholastic Book Fairs.
In this newly created role, Ms. Miller will serve as the national ambassador for independent reading, speaking at employee and parent trainings, book fair chairpersons’ workshops and professional learning seminars for educators to raise awareness of the importance of independent reading for all children. In addition, she will be responsible for tracking research on the role of independent reading in children’s growth and development through data collection and in-depth interviews with childhood literacy thought-leaders. Based in Dallas, TX, Ms. Miller will report to Anne Lee, Vice President of Program Development, Scholastic Book Fairs.
In making the announcement, Alan Boyko, President of Scholastic Book Fairs, said: “We know that the more children read the better readers they become, and Donalyn has a rare ability to inspire teachers, principals, parents and children to embrace the power of books to influence our lives and to discover the joy that is to be found within the pages of a book. A former fourth through sixth grade social studies and language arts teacher, Donalyn Miller is a nationally recognized speaker, author and blogger. During her 12-year teaching career, she was named the 2012 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts and was a finalist for the 2010 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year award.
Ms. Miller is the author of The Book Whisperer, a story about her career as a reading teacher and the creative approaches she uses to inspire students to read. She also authored Reading in the Wild, a book that examines the best ways to nurture good reading habits. Her work has been featured in publications including The Washington Post, The Reading Teacher and Educational Leadership.
Miller resides in Bedford, Texas, with her husband and younger daughter.
