Little Free Library® Announces Worldwide Book Drive for Children's and Young Adult Books At Its 25,000 Locations
Minneapolis, MN — To mark its third anniversary as a non-profit organization on Saturday, May 16, 2015, Little Free Library® invites the public to participate in the Worldwide Little Free Library Book Drive by donating new or gently-used children’s, teen and young adult books to their neighborhood Little Free Library book exchanges.
Children’s, teen and young adult books are always in high demand and year-round donations are encouraged. This book drive will help Little Free Library stewards provide books for kids to read as summer vacation approaches. Teachers believe Little Free Libraries can help curb the “summer slide”, when students can lose up to two-months of language proficiency during summer vacation.
Worldwide Little Free Library Book Drive participants should snap photos of themselves dropping off books and post them on social media on Facebook,Twitter, or Instagram for chances to receive Little Free Library swag.
With more than 25,000 locations in 72 countries, Little Free Library book exchanges are places where neighbors can share books, and build communities through their shared love of books and reading. More than 40 million books have changed hands through this network due to the efforts of volunteer stewards who install, curate and sustain the book exchanges.
Little Free Library aims to double the number of its locations and deepen its impact by 2017. The Little Free Library Big Book Access Kickstarter Campaign to raise $50,000 by May 21 will help accelerate these efforts. Many of the new locations will help address the problem of book deserts – rural or urban areas where books are difficult to access or afford for children and their families.
“We want to make sure that children have free books to read. Having access to books is integral to their success. Our book exchanges are not only access points to books, they are entry points to a love of reading and literature,” says Todd Bol, creator and Executive Director of Little Free Library.
