The YA Canon
While bloggers, critics, and fans have rounded up Best of YA book lists, readers continue to debate the merits of various books, and what defines quality YA literature. In thinking about building the YA canon, issues of diversity and literary vs. commercial appeal frequently come to the surface.
We don’t respect teenagers culturally, so it’s not a surprise we don’t take YA literature — stories primarily featuring teen-age protagonists — seriously. But we need to be. We should be excited about the growth of a real canon, and we should be having discussions about the merits of some books over others in ways that elevate them into a great public sphere. (Book Riot)
