Happy 100th Birthday, Beverly Cleary!
By the time she and her family moved to Portland, Cleary was an avid reader. With encouragement from her school librarian, she began penning children’s stories. Cleary has gone on to create such memorable characters as Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ellen Tebbits.
Cleary has received numerous awards for her writing including the prestigious Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw. At 100, she continues to inspire readers and writers of all ages. Each year on her birthday and throughout the month of April, we celebrate Drop Everything and Read Day (DEAR).
