The 2016 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award Winners Announced
June 2, 2016, Boston, MA — The 2016 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award winners were announced today by The Boston Globe and The Horn Book in a video presentation that was launched on hbook.com at 11 am. In their fiftieth year, the Boston Globe–Horn Book awards are among the most prestigious honors in the field of children’s and young adult literature.
A winner and two honor books were selected in each of three categories: Nonfiction, Fiction, and Picture Book.
Horn Book editor in chief Roger Sutton remarked, “I am so pleased that the judges recognized such a range of both big- and small-d diversity, with choices reflecting intimate moments of contemporary child life as well as larger themes drawn from U.S. and world history. And Steve Sheinkin joins Virginia Hamilton as a three-time winner!”

The awards are chosen by an independent panel of three judges appointed by Roger Sutton. The 2016 Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards judges are: Chair, Joanna Rudge Long, Horn Bookreviewer and former editor of Kirkus Reviews; Elizabeth Bird, collection development manager, Evanston (IL) Public Library; and Roxanne Hsu Feldman, middle school librarian, The Dalton School (NY).
The winning titles must be published in the United States, but they may be written or illustrated by citizens of any country.
The awards will be given at the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards ceremony on Friday, September 30, 2016, at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. The event begins with speeches by the awardees, followed by an autographing session and a celebratory evening reception. The following day, Saturday, October 1, The Horn Book at Simmons Colloquium features the award winners and honorees in talks, panel discussions, and small-group sessions, offering librarians, educators, and children’s literature professionals a chance to examine critical issues relevant to children’s and young adult literature.
