Expansion of BISAC Codes for Graphic Novels
BISAC codes are the standardized descriptors for books used across the publishing and bookselling industries. Effective January 2017, new graphic novel headings will be implemented in the Juvenile Fiction, Juvenile Nonfiction, Young Adult Fiction, and Young Adult Nonfiction categories.
The CBC’s Graphic Novel Advisory Committee believes the expansion will lead to more accurate categorization and greater discoverabilty of children’s graphic novels, a rapidly growing segment of the market:
The new codes allow graphic novel publishers to categorize their titles more accurately…it helps publishers to communicate to retailers, at a glance, what their book is about and how and where it should be positioned. (Publishers Weekly)
