CBC Educator Panels at SDCC: the recap!
San Diego Comic-Con and the Children’s Book Council collaborated on programming at the San Diego Public Library on Friday, July 21. It was wonderful day of panels at a gorgeous and tranquil venue. Our moderators were children’s librarians, two comics journalists and an editor.
The panel topics included:
- Developing an Essential Kids’ Graphic Novel Collection
- Bans and Challenges to Comics
- Middle Grade Fiction for Girls (and Boys)
- Nonfiction and Memoir in Graphic Novels
- Graphic Novel Adaptations
- Meet the Comic Book Makers
- Publishers’ Talkback Session
The Middle Grade Fiction panel was moderated by Brigid Alverson, a head writer for the SLJ blog: Good Comics for Kids. Her questions were thoughtful, plus the discussion benefited from the panelists knowing each other previously. So, when Victoria Jamieson (Roller Girl) thanked Raina Telgemeier (Ghosts) for being an early creator of autobiographical kids comics — their interaction was honest and charming.
Other lovely moments included the author-illustrator team of Rickety Stitch on their first panel ever, Meet the Comic Book Makers. And during Graphic Novel Adaptations, R. Sikoryak (Terms and Conditions) shared his homage to This One Summer, whose writer Mariko Tamaki (Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power!), was a fellow panelist.
All in the all, the second year of CBC participation at SDCC was a huge success. Attendance among educators and librarians was up and thanks to prepared moderators, like Alea Perez (chair YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens), the conversations remained lively and engaging.
