ALSC Announces Brian Selznick and David Serlin as presenters for Closing General Session at ALSC National Institute 2018!
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) announced that authors, Brian Selznick and David Serlin, will present the Closing General Session at the ALSC National Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. This event will take place at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza on Saturday, September 29, 2018 and is sponsored by Scholastic.
Brian Selznick is the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of the New York Times bestsellers The Invention of Hugo Cabret, adapted into Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning Hugo; Wonderstruck, which he adapted into the script for the 2017 film of the same name; and The Marvels. Among the celebrated picture books Selznick has illustrated are the Caldecott Honor Book, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins by Barbara Kerley and the Sibert Honor Book, When Marian Sang by Pam Muñoz Ryan.
David Serlin is a writer, editor, and historian who teaches at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author or editor of numerous books and articles for adults. Baby Monkey, Private Eye is his first book for children which he co-authored with Brian Selznick.
Other confirmed special events include a Breakfast for Bill program with Margarita Engle, Raúl Colón, and Mike Curato. On Thursday, September 27, Grace Lin will present the Opening General Session. Attendees will benefit from an on-site bookstore where they can buy books to have signed by their favorite speakers.
This Closing General Session is free for all individuals registered for the 2018 ALSC National Institute. All special events are included in the cost of registration. Registration fees include Thursday dinner, Friday breakfast, and Saturday breakfast.
“Having Brian Selznick and David Serlin present the closing session is going to be a noteworthy experience,” said 2018 ALSC National Institute Planning Task Force chair, Lisa Soper. “Serlin, being a debut children’s author, and Selznick’s wealth of experience in writing and illustrating for children will allow for a fun and insightful event! It will leave a lasting impression on all of us as we close out the 2018 Institute.”
