CBC Graphic Novel Committee panels at SDCC 2018
For the 3rd year, the Children’s Book Council Graphic Novel Committee collaborated with Comic-Con International and San Diego Public Library for the Comic Conference for Educators and Librarians. Held at the Central Library on July 20, we were delighted to coordinate eight publisher panels.
The panels ran 50 mins each and topics included:
Graphic Novel Activities for the Library or Bookstore
Meet the Makers: Kids Comics Extravaganza
Girl Power Comics: Middle Grade Fiction for Girls (and Boys)
Graphic Novel Adaptation: License to Thrill
Trends in Graphic Novel Publishing
Autobiography in Graphic Novels
LGBTQ Graphic Novels
Handling Challenges: Bans and Challenges to Comics
At “Meet the Makers” the moderator Amie Wright asked panelists which graphic novels they were excited for and Jenni Holm (Miss Communication) enthusiastically recommended Cottons by Heidi Arnhold – who was a fellow panelist!
The panelists on “Trends in Graphic Novel Publishing” represented a range of publishers from new imprints (Random House Graphic) to Disney Worldwide. It was interesting to hear answers from the indie publishers (Oni, Drawn & Quarterly), with their unique viewpoints on the industry.
Additional highlights included sign-language interpreters for “LGBTQ Graphic Novels,” and outstanding moderators like Robin Brenner (No Flying, No Tights) and Katie Moonin (Pop Culture Classroom) who kept the discussions exciting and informative.
With a wonderful offsite venue, excellent event staff and increased attendance, the CBC’s Graphic Novel Committee was delighted to contribute to this day of successful programming.
