Mental Health Awareness Month
Nationally observed since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month shines the spotlight on those living with mental health conditions which—according to the World Health Organization—includes depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, eating disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Despite great strides made in available treatments, there is still substantial stigma surrounding mental health disorders, especially because many conditions are invisible, leaving those who experience them—or their caregivers—feeling isolated. In an effort to eradicate the shame associated with these invisible illnesses, we’ve put together a select list of books for all different types of readers that show the various ways that people are impacted by and manage their mental health conditions, and to highlight and normalize the importance of seeking help when it’s needed.
