SCBWI ANNOUNCES 2014 BOOK LAUNCH AWARD WINNERS
The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 SCBWI Book Launch Award. The annual award, established by the SCBWI in 2012, provides authors or illustrators with $2,000 in funds to supplement the promotion and marketing of newly published works for children.
Congratulations to Stacey Lee of Santa Clara, California, author of Under a Painted Sky, a middle grade novel following the friendship of an African-American and Asian-American girl and their brave journey across the untamed Oregon Trail in 1849. Stacey plans to market her book with a book launch at a new local library, reach out to historical groups related to the California Gold Rush and the history of Asians and Africans in America. She also plans to attend the ALA and BEA conferences next year. Follow Stacey on Twitter @staceyleeauthor.
Congratulations to Don Tate of Austin, Texas, for his forthcoming historical picture book, Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton of Chapel Hill. This inspiring book tells the story of George Moses Horton, through his childhood struggle to learn to read, to becoming the first African American to publish a book in the south. Don will take his moving story on the tentatively titled “Freedom Tour: Celebrating 150 Years of Emancipation and Reconstruction” with fellow author Kelly Starling Lyons. The tour will begin in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to raise awareness of the community’s local hero and include a poetry slam and poetry contest. Learn more about Don at www.dontate.com.
“In today’s publishing world, most books need help to be discovered and find an audience,” SCBWI Executive Director Lin Oliver said.
“This grant gives SCBWI members the funds to create a unique marketing program and to play an active role in promoting their work,” added SCBWI President Stephen Mooser.
