South Carolina is the first state to conduct a detailed study of this kind. In particular, seven qualities relating to school libraries were correlated with student achievement on tests for English language arts (ELA) and writing standards:
- Library staffing
- Spending
- Teacher-Librarian Collaboration
- Circulation
- Collection size
- Access to computers
- Frequency of group visits
We have known in the past how important our role is, but this groundbreaking study proves that and validates what we already know: The school librarian and the library program help make schools stronger. (School Library Journal)
