Literary Greats Headline Children’s Literature Festival at Bank Street College of Education
BookFest @ Bank Street will host best sellers and Caldecott, Pura Belpré, and Newbery recipients to discuss topics in visual literacy
New York, NY, September 14, 2016 — On October 22, BookFest @ Bank Street will welcome authors, illustrators, editors, and other luminaries from the children’s literature community to share a closer look at their unique and often award-winning approaches to their work. Designed for adults, BookFest @ Bank Street is an annual daylong event devoted to the celebration, discovery, and discussion of books for children and teens.
This year’s panels will focus on subjects around visual literacy in children’s literature. Notable participants include Françoise Mouly, publisher of Toon Books and Art Editor of The New Yorker, New York Times bestseller Hervé Tullet, Caldecott Honor/Coretta Scott King winner Chris Myers, and Jesse Karp of the Pratt Institute. Megan Dowd Lambert, author of The Whole Book Approach: Reading Picture Books with Children, will conduct an interactive session with the audience on dialogic reading. BookFest attendees will also divide into small breakout groups to discuss book topics in early childhood and adolescent categories. The groups will examine middle grade and young adult titles, information books, and graphic novels. New this year is a breakout session on Spanish language and bilingual picture books. Local children’s book experts, reviewers, and teachers will lead the sessions, and books by participating authors and artists will be available for purchase from the Bank Street Book Store.
The event, which has sold out in the past several years, has limited seating for media who wish to attend.
