Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
The Children’s Book Council offers the following online resources for teachers, parents, and anyone interested in learning more about how Asian Americans have influenced and enriched every aspect of American life.
- United Federation of Teachers—Asian American and Pacific Islander Teaching Resources: In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, we have compiled high-quality classroom resources to help teachers explore and celebrate these diverse cultures with their students throughout the school year.
- National Endowment for the Humanities—Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage and History in the U.S: This Teacher’s Guide offers a collection of lessons and resources for K-12 social studies, literature, and arts classrooms that center around the experiences, achievements, and perspectives of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across U.S. history.
- National Education Association—Teaching Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage: Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have contributed to politics, military, medicine, aviation, entertainment, and sports in the United States. To help celebrate and educate about these contributions, we offer the following list of resources. Educators should be mindful of cultural appropriation when teaching about other cultures and understand that students of Asian, Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander heritage may experience lessons differently than other students.
- Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month—May is Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month: The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success.
- Federal Asian Pacific American Council—AANHPI RESOURCE CENTER: Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is observed annually in May to celebrate the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history, society, and culture. The following information has been curated by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) to educate the public about AAPIs and celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month.
- Facing History and Ourselves—11 Resources for Teaching About AAPI Experiences: Facing History invites educators to take advantage of the resources we’ve gathered from a host of cultural institutions to expand what the classroom has to offer on the historical and contemporary experiences of AAPI peoples.
- Pop Culture Classroom—Immigration at Angel Island: Immigration at Angel Island, a free comic and teaching guide, encourages students to learn about Angel Island and explore the complex and sometimes discriminatory history of immigration policy in the United States.
